The Upholsterer

About this Artwork

Robbie Rowland’s work ‘The Upholsterer’ was a site-specific installation shown at as part of the Depot exhibition held in 2008. Seven artists were given seven days of unrestricted access to Dandenong’s historic bus depot prior to its demolition. ‘The Upholsterer’ was set in the old Upholstery workshop situated in a house originally built in the 1950’s. Three main rooms of the house were utilised to create a series of sculptural works that cut and reconfigured the floors, walls and ceilings. The buildings surfaces and structures once exposed appear like flesh and bone as the anatomyof their form is revealed. The rigidity of the surfaces are collapsed allowing Rowland’s to create expressive gestures. Our inability to halt change and be resolute with memory is strengthened with the consideration that these basic materials and structures once gone can hold memorial a like humanity in death.
