watch
him watch

his daughter
watch

her small son
suck

the first
passionfruit

from their new vine
in Oakleigh

About this poem

This poem was partly written out of a lovely conversation with an elderly Oakleigh resident who was born in Italy.

About Sue Stanford

I have been writing for a long time and have published two books of poetry: “Opal” and “The Neon City”. I have been president of Melbourne Poets Union and still work on the committee and edit the feature poet column in their newsletter “POAM”. I am presently editing an anthology of poems from all over Australia about tea, wine and coffee. I am also involved in writing a PhD at Monash about the ground-breaking Haiku poet, Sugita Hisajo.
